Egypt Maintains Africa’s Lead in Fixed Internet Speeds for the Fifth Consecutive Year, Wins Ookla’s Prestigious Speedtest Award
Egypt has maintained its leading position in fixed broadband internet speeds across Africa for the fifth consecutive year, winning the Speedtest Award from global network intelligence and connectivity insights company Ookla.
The award recognizes Egypt for having the fastest fixed internet services on the continent during the first half of 2026.
The award was presented on the sidelines of Network X 2026, held in Vienna, Austria, from October 13 to 15, reaffirming the strong performance of Egypt’s fixed broadband networks compared with those of other African countries.
This achievement reflects the Egyptian government’s continued efforts to develop the country’s digital infrastructure, enhance telecommunications network efficiency, and expand fiber-optic networks nationwide. These efforts contribute to improving the quality of internet services available to citizens, strengthening network capacity to accommodate growing demand for telecommunications and data services, and supporting Egypt’s digital transformation objectives.
The Speedtest Award is based on actual measurements of fixed internet network performance collected by Ookla through its Speedtest platform. The assessment relies on a range of technical indicators reflecting real-world user experiences, providing an objective basis for evaluating network speeds and performance. The results showed that Egypt’s fixed broadband networks outperformed those in other African countries, securing the award for the first half of 2026.
The international recognition underscores the success of the regulatory and technical efforts led by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), in cooperation with telecommunications operators and service providers, to monitor network performance indicators, encourage investment in digital infrastructure, and improve service quality. These efforts help sustain Egypt’s leadership in fixed internet speeds across Africa while enhancing the competitiveness of the country’s telecommunications sector.
The award was received on behalf of H.E. Eng. Raafat Hindy, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, by the Egyptian delegation attending the conference. The delegation included Eng. Mohamed Shamroukh, Executive President of the NTRA; Eng. Mohamed El-Fawy, Advisor to the Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Technical Telecommunications Affairs; Dr. Hossam Abdel Mawla, NTRA Vice Executive President for Technical Affairs and Quality; and Eng. Ahmed Shawky Abdel Ghaffar, Director of Internet Technical Governance at the NTRA. The presentation took place during the award ceremony held on the sidelines of the conference.
Commenting on the achievement, Eng. Mohamed Shamroukh, Executive President of the NTRA, said that Egypt’s receipt of the award reflects the tangible progress made in developing fixed broadband networks and enhancing their efficiency. He added that it demonstrates the success of the Egyptian government’s efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure and improve the quality of telecommunications services.
Shamroukh noted that the international recognition provides further impetus to continue implementing the NTRA’s plans to modernize networks, improve their performance, and encourage service providers to increase investment in infrastructure. These efforts aim to ensure more efficient, higher-quality telecommunications services for citizens while keeping pace with rapid technological developments.
He also expressed his appreciation for Ookla’s role in measuring telecommunications network performance in accordance with international standards and providing objective indicators that encourage countries and service providers to upgrade their networks and improve user experiences.
Shamroukh reaffirmed that the NTRA would continue to implement the necessary regulatory and technical measures to enhance telecommunications service quality and strengthen Egypt’s regional and international standing in the telecommunications and information technology sector.
